ESOL - First Steps in English

This is an English reading and writing course for speakers of other languages (ESOL) who are new arrivals to the UK. The course aims to help them acquire basic communication skills to help them settle into their new community.

Open to learners who are Pre-Entry/Entry level, learners will focus on basic functional and practical skills that they may encounter in their first few weeks such as being able to give personal information; find their way around the community; shopping, and health. The focus is primarily on speaking and listening skills.

As well as learning the core vocabulary, reading, writing, and speaking and listening skills, by working independently and in small groups with your tutor, you will also develop wider skills such as:

● Problem solving

● Team working

● Communication skills

● Study skills.

● Use Google maps to navigate area.

How you will be taught, and your understanding checked:

Your tutor will work with you to understand what your level of knowledge is before you start to ensure that you are working at the right level for your needs. They will agree a learning plan for you to work towards. The course will be a mixture of whole class teaching, independent activity and small group/pair work, all supported by your tutor. Your tutor will talk to you about your progress and you will give you feedback to help you to continue to develop your skills and knowledge.

On successful completion of the core modules, your tutor will talk to you about your progress and achievements. They will help you to decide what to do next, for example.

● Continue your studies in ESOL and complete a further module (up to 120GLH per year)

● continue your studies in ESOL and work towards a qualification.

● Start to learn another subject.
