English at Work

This is an English course for speakers of other languages (ESOL). The course aims to help learners gain confidence and develop language skills for use in work situations.

Open to learners who are Entry 1 to Entry 3 level, learners will learn the vocabulary for and be able to talk about acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in the workplace; how to follow and sequence instructions; use appropriate greetings and conduct conversations with colleagues; understand key employment documentation and processes such as pay slips, sick pay and annual leave; Learners may also learn how to stay safe at work.

As well as learning the core vocabulary, reading, writing, and speaking and listening skills, by working independently and in small groups with your tutor, you will also develop wider skills such as:

● Problem solving

● Team working

● Communication skills

● Study skills.

● appropriate vs inappropriate workplace language/conversations

How you will be taught, and your understanding checked:

Your tutor will work with you to understand what your level of knowledge is before you start to ensure that you are working at the right level for your needs. They will agree a learning plan for you to work towards. The course will be a mixture of whole class teaching, independent activity and small group/pair work, all supported by your tutor. Your tutor will talk to you about your progress and you will give you feedback to help you to continue to develop your skills and knowledge.

On successful completion of the core modules, your tutor will talk to you about your progress and achievements. They will help you to decide what to do next, for example.

● Continue your studies in ESOL and complete a further module (up to 120GLH per year)

● continue your studies in ESOL and work towards a qualification.

● Start to learn another subject.

● Look for work or volunteering opportunities.

● Use your new skills in your everyday life.
